George, Martha and Enzo

Monday August 3 Lunedi 3 Agosto

Today is our day to go to Williamsburg which is a replica 18th century village on 300 acres showing the lifestyle of the early colonists. One small problem is that their website does not give an address or even what state they are in. But there is a Williamsburg Village very close to Washington DC so that must be the one, right? I have multiple routes to different destinations loaded in my now not so trusty GPS. I select Williamsburg and verify that that is the route that lit up when I pressed the touchscreen. Yes, the same touchscreen that has been causing so much trouble. We head toward Washington DC and crossed into Maryland less than 3 miles from our motel. The day is sunny and no rain is predicted. I faithfully follow every GPS direction and the device seems to be working well today. We cross the toll bridge into Baltimore when I remember that my route went around Baltimore. I check all of the route directions and I am going to the campground where we will meet CnC tonight. Harsh words are spoken and mutilation of the GPS is considered. I reinstruct the GPS, verify that it is going to Williamsburg and set out again. After a couple of mind changes the GPS settles on a route and we are on our way again. And indeed we end up at Williamsburg Village which is a residential suburb of Arlington, Virginia. We have a conversation with a resident and she has never heard of where we want to go to. She suggests Mount Vernon, George Washington's residence. I try again to get a location form the internet with no luck nor can the GPS find it in it's database of historical sites. The lady calls her husband who knows of it and he informs us it is another 3 hours in the wrong direction. So we go to Mount Vernon which was a very interesting place to visit. We toured the mansion, the outbuildings and saw both the first tomb where George was interred and the final tomb where both he and Martha now rest. We took a picture of statues of George, Martha and 2 grandchildren and then again with George wearing my Ferrari cap. I am sure Enzo Ferrari would have been proud to see George wearing Ferrari regalia. We also saw a movie about George's life and it mentioned the peanut and chestnut soup available at the restaurant. I decide to try it but the restaurant is closed until 5 PM which would mean rush hour traffic so we head for the campground. Traffic is light and we arrive with a minimum amount of searching and missed turns. ~175 miles today.

Oggi abbiamo visitato Mount Vernon la casa del nostro primo presidente George Washington. Io e Linda piacciono le cose storiche. Era molto interessante. Ci sono molte cose a vedere qui perche' siamo vicino a Washington DC. Domani vedremo il White House e qualche monumenti.
